If you’re new to sound healing, choosing your first instrument can feel a little overwhelming.
There is such a beautiful array of sound healing instruments available, and new ones are being developed all the time. From tuning forks to drums, gongs to kalimbas - each one has its own unique voice and purpose.
So where do you begin?
Start with your intention
Are you looking to:
- support your meditation practice?
- reduce stress or anxiety?
- work with sound for healing the body?
- play intuitively for relaxation or creativity?
- add an instrument to an existing set?
Your purpose will help guide you towards the right instrument much more easily.
Portable sound healing instruments for beginners
If you’re looking for something simple and easy to use, portability can really matter - especially if you want to practise at home or take your instrument to classes or sessions.
Gaia tuning forks are a lovely starting point. They are lightweight, portable, and can be used directly on the body. With a little guidance, they can support self-healing and can also be used with friends and family. Many people find them helpful for easing tension and discomfort.
A kalimba is another beautiful beginner-friendly instrument. It’s small, easy to carry, and comes pre-tuned so that it sounds harmonious without needing any musical experience. This makes it one of the best sound healing instruments for beginners who want something gentle and intuitive.
Choosing quality over cheap options
When buying your first sound healing instrument, it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option—but this can often be a false economy.
I learned this the hard way and wasted quite a bit of money on “cheap and cheerful” online purchases. Some items broke quickly, and others just felt energetically off.
I would especially avoid low-quality tuning forks, particularly the brightly coloured coded ones. While they may look appealing, they are often poorly made, and the manufacturing process is not as environmentally friendly.
Investing in a well-made instrument will give you a much better experience and a sound you can truly trust.
Don’t forget accessories
Some sound healing instruments require additional pieces.
For example, buying a gong is a beautiful investment—but you’ll also need a stable stand and a variety of mallets, which can add significantly to the overall cost.
It’s worth factoring this in from the beginning so there are no surprises.
Different kinds of playing mallets can also add new frequencies to your existing singing bowls too.
Consider your space and lifestyle
Before choosing your instrument think about where and how you’ll use it.
- Do you have space to display it or will it need to be stored?
- Will you be travelling with it?
- Does it come with a case?
If you’re short on space or want something versatile, smaller instruments like tuning forks or kalimbas can be ideal.
Do you need musical experience?
One of the lovely things about sound healing is that you don’t need to be a musician.
Instruments like Remo buffalo drums are very accessible. They are portable, beautiful to display, and there are plenty of tutorials available if you want to learn rhythms. But equally, playing intuitively can be just as powerful.
Trust your intuition
Once you’ve thought about the practical side, don’t forget the most important part—your intuition.
Which instrument are you drawn to?
Often, the right sound healing instrument will resonate with you in a way that’s hard to explain but feels very clear.
